THE DISTRIBUTION OF DARK MASS IN GALAXIES Techniques, Puzzles, and Implications for Lensing
نویسنده
چکیده
Gravitational lensing is one of a number of methods used to probe the distribution of dark mass in the Universe. On galactic scales, complementary techniques include the use of stellar kinematics, kinematics and morphology of the neutral gas layer, kinematics of satellites, and morphology and temperature profile of X-ray halos. These methods are compared, with emphasis on their relative strengths and weaknesses in constraining the distribution and extent of dark matter in the Milky Way and other galaxies. It is concluded that (1) the extent of dark halos remains ill-constrained, (2) halos need not be isothermal, and (3) the dark mass is probably quite flattened.

Exploring Properties of Dark and Visible Mass Distribution on Different Scales in the Universe
In this short note we discuss recent observation of linear correlation on log-log scale between distribution of dark and visible mass in gravitationally bound systems. The coefficient of such correlation appears to be essentially the same for various systems of dramatically different scales such as spiral galaxies of different luminosities and galaxy clusters. We briefly touch possible interpre...
متن کاملGalaxy-galaxy Lensing as a Probe of Galaxy Dark Matter Halos
Gravitational lensing has now become a popular tool to measure the mass distribution of structures in the Universe on various scales. Here we focus on the study of galaxy’s scale dark matter halos with galaxy-galaxy lensing techniques: observing the shapes of distant background galaxies which have been lensed by foreground galaxies allows us to map the mass distribution of the foreground galaxi...
متن کاملConstraints on the Warm Dark Matter Model from Gravitational Lensing
Formation of sub-galactic halos is suppressed in warm dark matter (WDM) model due to thermal motion of WDM particles. This may provide a natural resolution to some puzzles in standard cold dark matter (CDM) theory such as the cusped density profiles of virialized dark halos and the overabundance of low mass satellites. One of the observational tests of the WDM model is to measure the gravitatio...
متن کاملCharacterizing Dark Matter Concentrations Through Magnitude Distortions due to Gravitational Lensing
In addition to observing astronomical objects through the electromagnetic radiation they give off, astronomers also study the universe by analyzing gravitational effects on mater. More specifically, one can work back from these observed effects to determine the mass distribution in the universe (both inside and outside galaxies). In this project, we worked on one specific gravitational effect: ...
متن کاملConstraining the Mass Distribution of Cluster Galaxies byWeak
Analysing the weak lensing distortions of the images of faint background galaxies provides a means to constrain the average mass distribution of cluster galaxies and potentially to test the extent of their dark matter haloes as a function of the density of their environment. The observable image distortions are a consequence of the interplay between the eeects of a global cluster mass distribut...
